Most leaky faucets can easily be fixed. This decreases wasted water in your home on a daily basis and save you a lot of money over the longer term. Your water bill will be significantly lower each month.

Staining the floors of your basement makes for an easy facelift. Staining concrete floors is less costly than replacing them, and it looks very stylish. Staining adds durability to the floor and keeps it easy to clean. Choose stains that add luster and shine to the floor. Your floors will look like they cost more than they do.

Do you wish your home was cooler or allowed less light inside? If yes, look to tint your home’s windows. It’s easy to do this as a DIY home improvement project. In the end, it will even save you money as it reduces how often you need to run your AC unit.

Satellite Tv

I need to find out if the socket for satellite tv is actually connected to anything. I live in a flat and have never tried the socket and would like to know before I buy a set top box. It is not possible for me to go and find the dish. I can only look at the socket in my living room. Thanks. I have no friends with satellite boxes. The socket has four terminals, Sat1 Sat2 TV Radio. It is not for cable tv I'm sure. After looking around, I learned — The easiest way would be to ask a friend to try plugging their satellite TV box into your cable to see if it works. Not only do you need a dish but it needs to be aligned correctly. If that cable is for cable TV then nothing other than a cable TV box and subscription from the company that owns it will ever work. If the wire goes through the wall can't you look at it from outside and have a guess where it goes? Even if the building has twenty floors you should be able to see it from outside.

There are literally hundreds of unencrypted television channels that are available for free and unencrypted for those that have the right hardware. This vide. . .

Bedroom Lighting

May 20, 2013 by LV2006 | Comments Off | Filed in Home

I repurposed an old, small wooden desk to be my vanity and added a mirror to complete the look. After moving into my new apartment, I realize that the bedroom lighting is not enough light to do my makeup and hair. I am looking for some lights to possibly mount on each side of the mirror or possibly above the mirror to brighten things up. I looked up the lights that go underneath cabinets, but I am afraid that they may be too bright and harsh on my eyes. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Today I found out that… I'd steer clear of fluorescent. Maybe some sconce lighting that could be attached to the sides of the mirror? Below is some sites that show a wide variety of sconce lighting. The second site is from the first site but it's something that could be mounted above the mirror or on the sides. Good job at re purposing a piece of furniture. I'm sure it's beautiful. I also want to suggest that you look into clip on desk lamps. Sounds cheesy I know but they come in a multitude of styles and finishes and would be the most affordable and easily changed. ..

Slab Leak Repair

May 20, 2013 by LV2006 | 2 Comments | Filed in Get Home Repairs

The leak is under a bathroom slab, under the tub location, between the end of a 6 inch fiber conduit pipe and a 45 degree iron elbow, which is inserted in the fiber pipe. I was wondering if there is a product that could seal this leak from the outside instead of having to break up the slab to repair it. I've read that fiber pipe is pretty brittle. I was so glad to find this — There is a method but it's rather expensive. . . I'm not familiar with it for it's rather new. . . . There's a liner that can be sprayed in the pipe that forms a new inside to your drain. . Not sure if they can do a tub drain only. . . You are more than likely goin to have to bust up the slab. . Unless the drain is fairly close to the outside wall of your home then you can tunnel under the slab to repair it that way. . Either way you go it's gonna be costly

Having A Hard Time Finding Home Improvement Ideas? Look No Further!

If you do home improvement work yourself, you can avoid spending a lot of money to update your home. With the proper background and advice, you can finish virtually any project. The information presented here will give you good guidance for DIY home improvement.

A beginner’s tip for home improvement is to think about what you personally want to accomplish. Include a little bit of your own personality in every project.

Use these two steps to make your ceiling look higher. Paint your walls or add a floor lamp. This can be a good way to enhance the look of your room. Your eyes are going to focus on the lines, and your ceilings will seem higher than they are.

Sealing up holes or cracks in your home can prevent unwanted bugs and reduce cooling and heating bills at the same time. Seal any holes around windows, baseboards and other areas using caulk. When the caulk is dry, insects will have difficulty entering and air will have difficulty getting out.

Putting in the right type of lighting for a room makes a tremendous difference. A bright room feels warm and inviting. Just adding another lamp can make a huge difference. A dark area will be improved through adding a bit of brightness.

While most people enjoy the traditional feeling of a conventional, wood-burning fireplace, there are better options. Aside from the looks, the heat created by a wood fire mostly escapes through the chimney. Additionally, fires use of lots of oxygen, and that’s not good for your health.

Padding sharp corners of furniture is a small improvement you can make that is especially important if you have young children. You can get protectors for the corners of your furniture from a store or just use tape made of foam. Something else to consider is taping down any loose wires that could potentially strangle your children.

Put peepholes in your outside doors! Before you open up your front door, you should ask who it is. Installing a peephole is a snap and costs very little. You just need a drill and an hour or so out of your day. Now when someone knocks on your door, you will always know who it is.

Interestingly, an attractive front door can add as much as 10 percent to the market value of a home. You can update the look of your door by investing in a relatively inexpensive new doorknob and lock. You might be surprised at the variety of available shapes and finishes.

Talk with your neighbor about drainage before you start a major landscaping project. Your landscape plan should drain all excess water away from your property. Often the convenient way to do this is to dump it on your neighbor’s property, but they are not likely to be happy with this! You can create drainage plans that is beneficial for both parties; however, if you don’t talk with your neighbors, this won’t occur.

Here’s hoping that the advice in this article will aid you in making all your dreams for your home come true. Implement these tips in any project you can think of to get the beautiful house you’ve always wanted.

Alarm Repair

May 17, 2013 by LV2006 | 1 Comment | Filed in Get Home Repairs

Let's try this again – if you aren't going to bother reading this section please don't bother answering telling me how I am going to be evicted – blah blah blah. I am not worried about being evicted this is my last month. But a bill came from my landlord for a fire alarm repair – 4 mos ago and is no basically saying if we don't pay it with the rent that they will take the charge out of my rent and deny my rent then because the full rent won't be paid. I don't care about paying the charge as it was technically my own fault. However I just want to pay the rent then pay the bill next week. Or even better yet, why can't they simply take it out of my security deposit. Can someone please just answer me or direct me where to look? Thank you. Kate – you are a complete idiot. Essentially — Specifically, the landlord will not want to take it from the security deposit, as the deposit is for any damages the tenant does or causes while a tenant. Until you move out, there is no assurance that you will leave the space as you rented it. The deposit is the only chance the owner has that the tenant will make an honest attempt to leave the place in good order. I can understand your desire to pay as you deem necessary but it goes against the good faith the landlord gave when renting the space to you. You are asking the person to trust you. . First, that you will leave the space in good shape. Second, that after you have vacated, that you will in fact pay a bill that you owe for causing damage. You may in fact be a very honorable person, but I imagine the landlord has been "around" some people who don't share that same honor and doesn't want to get taken. Or the landlord may not have much honor thus finds it difficult to believe that anyone else does as well. My advice would be to pay the bill and the rent. It's not worth the hassle in the long run. I don't agree with the landlord's decision to attempt to declare you have not paid the rent if you have, in fact. . Paid the rent. I don't believe he has a legal position to stand on in claiming that right unless it was written as a clause in the lease to add repairs to the monthly rent. Most leases are not written that way. However, when all is said and done. He will be receiving the money one way or another by simply taking you to small claims court. Just pay the bill and move on. . Life's too short for this type of fight. Save your energy for a better fight. Much luck. .

How to repair smoke alarm that keeps beeping even when you fit a new battery . Guaranteed to stop that annoying beep every minute or so . Enjoy .

Ac Service

May 16, 2013 by LV2006 | 4 Comments | Filed in Home Services

My Keeprite home AC didn't work properly. The service guy came and replaced a 35+5/440V capacitor and charged me $86 Canadian Dollars. Then he added freon gas in from 22PSI to 70PSI and charged me $192. He said the price for freon gas is $4/PSI. In addition, he charged me labor $155 for about 1. 5 hours work in my home. I felt ripped off. A simple search finds that a similar capacitor is about $14. Any one can tell me the price of freon gas in similar situation ? As a non-technical guy in need of AC service, how do I know if his charge is reasonable or not ? Can I complain to his company and get some money back ? Please help. The freon is R22. In fact the $460 didn't complete the fix. It started to work and stopped after one or two hours. After several hours I started the AC again and it worked for another one or two hours then stopped. The service guy came again, reversed the turning direction of the colling fan. Looks like it is finally fixed. Thanks for all answers. My point is how customers know the charges (parts) are right or not in that situation ? If you spend an hour to search the price on the net you will be charged for another $90 because the service guy is on site waiting for you. "The time to ask this question was before the work was done. " — Perfect in theory but not practical. You HAVE to pay $90 just for the guy to come and you have little knowledge and little choice to turn down his estimate. I simply asked a question that how would a customer know if the charge is reasonable or not, some A/C guy started getting angry or scared. This only reminds us that WE CAN NOT TRUST THEM. Honest people would welcome these questions. I do services and I know if you are not open and fair, you do not get trust. BTW, the company I used is Air Tech in Toronto / Richmond area. I would leave you to judge it was fair or not. I was happy to learn… Something doesn't sound quite right – especially about the Freon (fyi: Freon is just a brand name for refrigerant). Since you're Canadian R22 is still a very popular refrigerant there (and systems will be manufatured in the US with R22 until the year 2010) and mostl likely unless your A/C is over 10 years old R22 is the refrigerant used. If it's over that in age it could be R12 and R12 is extremely expensive. Depending on how low the charge was in your system, the price he charged may not be too far out of line. You also don't say if it's a window unit or a central system. The average going rate in the US for labor on hvac systems is $70 to 90 US per hour. I don't have the exact conversion rate handly but I'm guessing $100 to120 Canadian wouldn't be to far off, so if he worked about 90 minutes, that labor charge would be about right. As far as the capacitor goes, one about the same isn't the same as one exactly the same. If you still feel like you got ripped off, call the servicing company and ask them to explain the charges in detail.
